The Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association is one of the oldest state associations for professional outdoor communicators. Since its founding in 1942, its members have played leading roles in the outdoor communications field, regionally and nationally as well as at home in Tennessee. Throughout the years, the association has stressed the importance of craft improvement, professional ethics, development of new talent, and fellowship among its members.

For more than 80 years Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association members have been recognized as leaders in the field of outdoor communications. Our members include writers, photographers, film producers, broadcasters, and artists who produce material that is disseminated to the public. The focus of their work is on outdoor recreation or travel which is dependent upon natural resources, but may also include environmental or conservation issues.
